What is camistry?

camistry = camera + chemistry. A film photograph is not created by the camera alone — the camera, lens, film stock, exposure, processing, scanning and photographer all contribute. Our core idea is Camera × Film × You, and our product question is simple: what do you want your photos to feel like?

How we assign style tags

Style tags such as "Strong vignette", "Pocketable" or "Warm rendering" are editorial guidance, not laboratory measurements. They describe the character a camera is widely associated with — based on its optics, its focus system, its era, and how the film community actually uses it. Different examples of the same model can render differently; treat every description as a starting point.

How beginner friendliness is evaluated

We score beginner friendliness 1–5 by looking at how automatic the camera is, how forgiving its focus and exposure systems are, how easy it is to find working examples, and how much room there is for error. A fully automatic compact scores higher than a full-manual SLR — that's a feature of the tool, not a judgment of the photographer.

How price ranges are estimated

Prices are approximate used-market estimates in USD, drawn from typical online listings, and are marked with a date. The used market moves; always check current listings before buying. We will refresh ranges periodically.

How film pairings are chosen

Pairings are recommendations, not guaranteed outcomes. We suggest stocks that tend to complement a camera's character — for example, warm color film with a lens known for warm rendering, or a flexible portrait stock with a soft compact lens. Film choice, exposure and processing will always change the result.

Editorial guidance vs objective data

On each camera page, objective data (production years, format, lens, focus system, exposure modes) is clearly separated from editorial guidance (warm, dreamy, unpredictable). We try never to present a feeling as a fact.

Affiliate policy

Some "Check Current Prices" links are or will become affiliate links. If you buy through them, camistry may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. Affiliate relationships never influence which cameras we recommend or how we rank them. Merchant links are currently non-affiliate placeholders until affiliate programs are set up.

The recommendation logic

The finder uses deterministic scoring, not AI: style match +5, use-case match +3, control match +2, budget as a required filter, and a small beginner-fit bonus where relevant. Results are ranked by score so every recommendation can explain itself.
